Overview

02

The story behind the story

Victims of online hate may show low self-esteem; feel lonely or isolated, suffer from depression and sleeping disorders, increased stress, anxiety and feelings of insecurity; as well as diminished levels of trust (SELMA, 2019; Saha & De Choudhury, 2019; Wachs et al, 2022).

Online hate is a real problem and reports involving hate crimes have increased more and more each year in Brazil.

With the support of UNICEF Venture Fund in collaboration with End Violence Against Children we decided to tackle this phenomenon combining an engaging story with a personalized journey of evidence-based strategies for emotional and technical coping.

In partnership with UNICEF Brazil, Weni, Viração Educomunicação, Redes Cordiais and members of the Ashoka Young Changemakers, as well as psychologists, scriptwriters and a youth committee that represented their peers' voices, we co-created an immersive therapeutic learning experience to challenge hate and stop its expansion.

Como Se Eu Fosse is partially available as an Open Content solution to share with the world and for others to join our fight by using, remixing, adapting and sharing this effective solution that could potentially decrease the expansion of hate and its impact on youth's well-being.

Having gone through this experience, I think I will deal with this kind of situation better in the future, helping my mental health. [...] By remembering a past situation in my head, it made me understand that I already have some of these skills, and there are others I need to work on. It made me understand that other people are going through the same things as I go through, that sometimes I invalidate some of my feelings and I shouldn't be doing that.female, 19 years old, Osasco SP
I thought hate speech was normal and after this experience I realized that it is actually hard and difficult. And there are ways to deal with it, I didn't know that.female, 17 year old, Pernambuco PE
It made me realize that sometimes we get really combative when we get in touch with hate speech and end up forgetting to take care of ourselves. [...] We dive more and more into the debate and we get more stressed. When we actually should be taking care of ourselves so we don't get that stressed and deal with it rationally.male, 28 years old, São Paulo SP
I feel excited, but with a slight “aftertaste” from the chatstory, you know? I think that the construction of the narrative is really powerful, it really shocked me. Presenting these themes this way is really effective.male, 20 years old, São Paulo
I think that Talk2U has remarkable characteristics. It approaches delicates matters in a very human and impactful way.female, 38 years old, Porto Alegre RS
